Gyrometric have a method of measuring torque in rotating shafts using encoder read heads either side of a torsionally flexible drive element.
For a general indication of torque and for protecting drives from torque overload positioning the read heads either side of a flexible drive coupling is convenient.
For accurate torque measurement calibrated torque tubes are used made of steel, or carbon fibre.
